Martial arts, Basketball, and Websites: how egoism and team play collide in you

I vividly remember one of the main reasons I quit practicing and doing martial arts (shotokan karate do) about 12 years ago – it didn’t feel right. I’ve always enjoyed it (still love watching martial arts films and occasionally watch mixed martial arts fights), but at that time it seemed like egoism to me.

I earned my green belt, and then quit it. I felt I needed something else. One way to put it, I wanted to be a part of something big. That “something big” turned out to be basketball.

Now, I am no 7 foot giant (only 5’10 to be exact), but I played with heart for 7 years or so, after wrapping things up with karate. I was good for only a couple of things: I was a fairly good 3-point shot, and I loved playing in the paint, grabbing every rebound I could reach for. Everything else was pretty mediocre – my zone shot was poor, I was an awful dribbler (although could run pretty fast) and my stamina could have been a lot better. Anyway, basketball made me a team player, made me realize that even the best player cannot take it all up on his own (Wilt Chamberlain’s case).

Azerbaijani show-business going bananas…

I am not going to comment on show-business as a whole, will stick to our local Azerbaijani show-biz here. Sometimes, our “stage stars” make these pathetic, useless comments that the press just swallows, and then spits out to the usual readers.

I’ll give a small example. Not so long ago, one of our national artists, singer Aybeniz Hashimova made a jaw-dropping statement, while being on a local TV-show. Basically, what she said was that most of our young singers suck, and her daughter (also singer) Aynishan is the next big thing.

“First of all, these singers are pathetic. They try to ruin my daughter’s career, and I know, that one day, God will punish them all for this. They are scared to say something to my face, so its all being done behind my back. They’re all worthless, compared to my daughter. No matter how hard they try, they won’t be able to do anything to her. One day, she will even get an Oscar, you’ll see. I think, they all need to undergo some treatment in a psychiatric hospital.”

Day by day remarks: open thoughts and a new idea

It’s nice to be learning something new every day. When I was younger, I wasn’t really interested in that. Last couple of years – I’ve changed my opinion on learning (mostly due to my exhausting work schedule). Some people say that “you won’t know the taste, unless you taste it yourself” – now, this can be said about almost anything, and its true as well.

I’ve stumbled upon another problem – if yesterday I was too lazy to learn something new, then today I simply lack time to learn something new, even if I want to. On the other hand, (I’ve read this in one of these filmmaking books that I bought on Amazon) – “You MAKE your own time”. This phrase is just as hard as a straight punch to the face. If you want to learn something – make your own time, and try your best to do what you got to do.

Some time ago, I wrote a post about some of my websites. And, couple of days ago, another “bright” idea struck me in the head, and (thank god, I did not delete those domains for good) I’ve decided to use one of those inactive websites for a new project.

Mutant fruits and fake money… – PHOTOS

I clearly remember a year or two ago, I did not have this habit. Well, now I do – occasionally I photograph some things that happen around me, at work, at home, doesn’t matter, and I share them. In this post, I’ll share some of the latest ones with the readers.

First one. People in our office usually have their lunch breaks. Some prefer eating in the kitchen, others (like me) eat right at the office table, due to lack of free time. Anyway, that day, I decided to take a couple of shots of this giant mutant tomato, that our girls in the office brutally cut to pieces, and ate it afterwards. I dont remember seeing this big tomato in a while. Take a look at the pics below.

“Eurovision-2011” winners visited our office… and the outcome was…

Couple of days ago, “Eurovision-2011” winners Eldar Gasymov and Nigar Jamal visited our office. No, not because they really wanted to, and no, we didnt pay them to stop by. They were invited to participate in an online radio discussion.

So anyway, they came in, as usual talked about how busy they are these days, and so on. It was nice to see them – afterall they won, and in some sense, made the country of Azerbaijan a little richer – imagine all the tourists coming in next year!

Among the questions that Eldar and Nigar were asked was one about popularity…that “the popularity of a Eurovision singer lasts for only one year…”, I caught myself thinking that this in fact is really sad.

New joint project – “Internet Streets”

A few days ago I posted some brief info about Weird Paper, that I’ve created. In this post, I would like to introduce another creation of mine – “Internet Streets” project. Well, in fact, the project is not mine completely.

I had this idea for a while, and one day I met a few interesting people on an internet marketing forum. So, I decided to pitch this idea to them, and see if they would agree to work with me. It worked. So, we put up the site, and now you can see it at: http://internetstreets.org.

I’ll give you a little introduction – “Internet Streets” is a website with a few categories, that are being run by several people (me, and those guys I work with). So basically, its an online website, where everyone has his “street”, and write on a specific subject.

Indian mobile phones available in Baku? Yep, looks like it.

Not so long ago, I noticed that one of our female co-workers has a strange phone, of unique type I’ve never seen before. The phone name “Micromax” didn’t ring the bell, so I googled it, and found out that its an Indian phone. The company’s website looks quite nice, and there are lots of other models available as well.

Now, I’d like to point out that this is not a cheap one-post advertising for Micromax, so don’t even go there. Just a post on something I thought was interesting, since, according to this female co-worker of mine, there are no such mobile phones in Baku (probably in Azerbaijan as well). Elite phones here are BlackBerries and IPhones. I stick to old Nokias. Yay! And, while we’re here, check out the “Micromax” phone photos that I shot below. Read the rest of this entry »
